Depression symptoms


Symptoms of depression include:

- you're feeling down (depressed literally means down)

- you're feeling sad, with little energy or interest in things that used to be of interest to you...

- you find it hard to concentrate ("What's the point?")...

- you have a really hard time getting up in the moning, feel lethargic throughout the day...

- or you feel unable to sleep at all... you experience sleeplessness and restlessness...

These symptons are clinical depression symtoms only if they have been going on for a while (at least a couple of weeks). If any of the above lasts just a few days, it's not necessarily clinical depression. It may just be fatigue.


Dr. Insel, director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), describes how depression affects both the mood and the body:

- "Depression brings a tremendous sense of hopelessness. When you're in the middle of it, you can't remember that things were any better."

- "It's not just people feeling lousy. Depression affects the cardiovascular system, the endocrine system, even bone growth leading to osteoperosis."
