Divorce recovery through rituals

Our modern life may seem to be lacking in rituals compared to primitive societies, with their colorful ceremonies. Yet, it may simply be that we are so accustomed to the rituals in our society that we do not see them as such. They are not exotic enough for us to think of them as rituals.

Most of the important passages of our life are accompanied by some sort of ritual. Births, weddings, funerals... it may be a simple event, or an elaborate ceremony, but something marks the moment as out of the ordinary.

For divorce, on the other hand, the out-of-the-ordinary stuff is often limited to the drama of fighting out. We do not have divorce rituals to acknowledge that important milestone in our own lives as individuals, and in the lives of all those who are affected by it, family and friends.

Having a ritual to acknowledge divorce helps digest it, so to speak.
