I want to share with you an intriguing quote about relationships. It is not an exact quote. It is adapted from Anne Carson’s Eros the Bitterweet.
Love is a triangle of the beloved, the lover, and that which comes between them.
There is certainly a lot of that in couples therapy. I find it an intriguing concept to imagine that, in the therapy room, there is not just the two people of the couple, but also a third entity, the apex of the triangle, that which comes between the two people in the couple. And that our work is to make that third point visible, and to integrate it.
