Stop smoking! How to quit smoking cigarettes

Well, the first thing to do is... just do it. Stop smoking. Hopefully, it will work. If it doesn't work, it's not a failure: It's just the beginning of the journey. You see, changing habits that are as ingrained as smoking is a complex process.

Smoking is not just about the taste of cigarettes, or the physical need for nicotine. There's a whole lot of other things connected to this habit. For instance, the gestures and the rituals associated with smoking (see how fidgety you get when you stop having a cigarette to hold on to). or, smoking may have been helping you deal with feeling nervous, or tense.

So quitting is not just about cigarettes. It is also about all the other stuff that is related to how and why you smoke. This is why it is often more productive to think of the process of quitting as a journey of self-discovery.

I describe the process of changing deeply ingrained habits on another page.
